Portugal ends Roberto Martinez contract after 0-1 loss to Spain
FPF has begun searching for a replacement after Portugal exited the 2026 World Cup in the round of 16.
The Portugal Football Federation ended Roberto Martinez's contract and that of his staff after Portugal were eliminated in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup following a 0-1 loss to Spain. FPF announced the decision on Wednesday, following Martinez's statement after the match that he would not continue in the job. The 52-year-old Spaniard had led Portugal since January 2023 with the target of winning the World Cup, but he said failing to reach that goal made staying on untenable. During his tenure, Martinez delivered the 2025 UEFA Nations League title. Portugal also exited the Euro 2024 quarterfinals after losing a penalty shootout to France. FPF said the search for a successor has already begun.
