Central Jakarta police cite missing notice in BEM UI rally, blockades protested
Police said they only received a PDF via WhatsApp, while BEM UI called the four-layer blockade on Thamrin excessive.
Metro Jakarta Pusat Police questioned the BEM UI protest with several campus groups around Bundaran HI, Central Jakarta, on Friday (12/6/2026), because it had not received an official notification letter. Metro Jakarta Pusat Police Chief Reynold EP Hutagalung said police only received a PDF of the notification letter via WhatsApp on Thursday morning, but no follow-up came before the rally took place. He cited Article 10 of Law No. 9 of 1998, which requires the person in charge to deliver the notice directly to police at least 3x24 hours before the protest. On the other hand, BEM UI Chairman Yatalathof Ma'shum Imawan protested the four-layer blockade set up by officers on Jalan MH Thamrin near the Tosari Transjakarta stop. According to BEM UI, the crowd did not carry any objects that could trigger unrest.
