Polls show Trump at 36%-39% approval as economic worries deepen
What's new: Both surveys found broad pessimism over household finances, with gas prices and living costs weighing on voters before the midterms.
Two new polls found President Donald Trump under pressure on the economy ahead of the midterm elections, with overall approval at 36% in the NPR/PBS News/Marist survey and 39% in a Fox News poll. In the Marist poll, only a third approved of his handling of the economy, while 59% disapproved of his job performance. Fox found 73% rated the economy negatively, 44% said they were falling behind financially and 59% felt pessimistic about the outlook. Both polls pointed to strains from gas prices and broader living costs. The Marist survey, conducted June 8-11 among 1,340 respondents, also found Democrats more motivated to vote and some slippage in Trump's support among Republicans.
