Poll finds 16% of Americans back Trump’s White House UFC event

What’s new: Even among Republicans, only 31% called the plan appropriate in the Reuters/Ipsos survey of 4,531 adults.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll found limited support for President Donald Trump’s plan to stage a UFC cage match at the White House as part of events tied to the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. Just 16% of Americans said the event was appropriate, while 46% said it was inappropriate. Among Republicans, 31% supported the plan, far below the roughly eight in 10 Republicans who approve of Trump’s overall job performance. The administration also asked a judge to throw out a lawsuit seeking to block the event, after local residents argued sports are barred on the South Lawn and the metal arena under construction lacks required approval. The UFC card is scheduled for Sunday, Trump’s 80th birthday.
