Poland's president calls crisis talks after top court standoff

What's next: Party leaders were due at the presidential palace as police held the court perimeter and three people were arrested.

Poland's constitutional crisis escalated after President Karol Nawrocki cut short a trip to Senegal and called emergency talks with party representatives following a standoff at the Constitutional Court in Warsaw. Police surrounded the court after the suspension of court president Bogdan Święczkowski, and Nawrocki demanded officers leave the building. Supporters of the opposition Law and Justice party protested outside, with some trying to push through barricades; police said three people were arrested. Prime Minister Donald Tusk defended the move as part of restoring the rule of law after years of disputed judicial changes under PiS. The clash centers on judges appointed during the previous government and Tusk's effort to reverse reforms criticized by European courts and the EU.
