Spain PM links Russia-Israel networks to Ceuta hoaxes
Madrid rejects allegations of Rabat involvement and adds 168 million euros in emergency funds after 72,000 migrants breached Ceuta.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez accused networks linked to Russia and Israel of helping spread disinformation that fueled a large migrant wave into Ceuta on July 30-31. He said a European External Action Service study found misleading rumors on social media, including a claim that migrants entering Ceuta by sea could not be deported to Maroko. Sanchez also rejected allegations that Maroko authorities were directly involved in the crisis. More than 72,000 migrants crossed irregularly into the Spanish enclave in North Africa, and at least 100 people died, according to local authorities. About 5,000 migrants remain in Ceuta. Amid public protests, the Spanish government is preparing an additional 168 million euro in emergency funds to revive the territory's economy.
