Peru earthquake kills at least 6, injures 21 in Junín region

What's new: About 48 homes were destroyed, 18 were damaged and roughly 300 people were displaced in the Andes quake zone.

At least six people were killed and 21 injured after two earthquakes struck Peru's Junín region on Saturday night, hitting mountain communities in Chupaca province east of Lima. Peru's National Seismological Center put the stronger quake at magnitude 5.1, while the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre earlier estimated it at 5.6. Authorities said emergency crews and firefighters reached the area early Sunday as concerns persisted that more victims could be trapped. Preliminary assessments showed 48 homes destroyed and 18 damaged, with about 300 residents receiving tents. Officials said many homes in the affected communities were built with adobe, which worsened the damage. Peru sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where earthquakes are common.
