Pakistan police fatally shoot Australian girl during robbery response

The officer who fired was arrested and remanded, while Australia called for a transparent investigation.

An Australian girl was shot dead by police in Punjab, Pakistan, as officers responded to a robbery on June 10. According to Punjab Police, police exchanged fire with suspects who had held up passengers in a family car. In the confusion, an officer mistakenly believed the suspects were fleeing in the victims' vehicle and opened fire. Hania, whom police said was 10, was killed; her father and brother were injured. Australian media reported the family from Perth was visiting relatives in Pakistan. The girl's father has filed a criminal complaint, and the officer who fired has been arrested, brought before a court and remanded in custody. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called for a proper and transparent investigation.
