Pakistan army chief met Iran's president in Tehran amid US standoff

Pakistan army chief Asim Munir met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Tehran on Aug. 24 as Islamabad pressed its mediation effort in the Iran-US conflict. Iranian state media said Munir also held talks with parliamentary speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and with Mohsen Rezaei, who heads Iran's highest national security body. Iran's Foreign Ministry had framed the visit as part of Pakistan's push to strengthen regional peace and security. The meetings came after US President Donald Trump spoke with Munir last week, according to a US source cited by AFP. Pakistan helped broker a memorandum of understanding in June, but negotiations have since stalled as Washington sharpened pressure on Tehran.
