U.N. experts urge Meta to protect political speech in Brazil vote

A monitoring report found thousands of accounts and posts restricted, including those of journalists, human rights defenders and civil society members.

U.N. experts urged Meta to ensure freedom of expression during Brazil's election after reports of limits on lawful political speech on its platform. In a written statement from the U.N. Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights on Wednesday, they said the practice risked affecting freedom of expression, association, political participation and equal treatment of political views. Monitoring reports found thousands of accounts and posts suspended, downgraded in visibility or limited in reach, including those of journalists, human rights defenders, civil society actors and content creators. Election observers also pointed to disruptions to candidate campaign accounts, limits on Instagram posts and uneven treatment among parties in AI image features, WhatsApp channel search and Stories.
