Oregon school shooting killed 4 before armed parent stopped teen

What's new: researchers said it was the first U.S. school homicide in their database stopped by an armed civilian before police arrived.

An armed parent who has two children at Silver Rail Elementary fatally shot a teenage attacker after the gunman killed three children and a teacher at the Bend, Oregon, school, according to accounts cited by local and national media. The attack unfolded in minutes after the teen forced entry by firing through locked doors. The parent, identified as Kaylub Giamanco, was praised by relatives and politicians, but the episode quickly reignited the U.S. fight over gun laws. James Densley of Metro State University, who helps run the Violence Prevention Project database, said the case appears to be the first school homicide in its records ended by a civilian with a gun before officers got there.
