OpenAI cuts Cursor off from its models after SpaceX takeover

What's next: OpenAI set a Nov. 12 shutoff date, while Cursor said its OpenAI models handle about 5% of user traffic.

OpenAI plans to stop supplying its AI models to Cursor after Elon Musk’s SpaceX completed its acquisition of the coding startup earlier this month. The company said it triggered a contract clause tied to a change of control and proposed Nov. 12, 2026, as the shutoff date. OpenAI said it could not trust SpaceX to follow its terms of service, citing past contract breaches by Musk’s companies. Cursor CEO Michael Truell said the company was working with OpenAI to resolve the dispute and that OpenAI models account for about 5% of Cursor user traffic. The move deepens a long-running feud between Musk and OpenAI leaders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman.
