Ontario warns Trump’s Canada tariffs would hit U.S. auto market hard

Ontario Premier Doug Ford stepped up Canada’s criticism of President Donald Trump’s tariff push, warning that a broader trade war would damage both economies and hit the U.S. auto market especially hard. Ford’s comments came after Trump moved to impose 50% tariffs on many Canadian goods following the collapse of U.S.-Canada trade talks. Canada has replied with retaliatory tariffs on many U.S. products due to begin Sept. 8. Ford also pushed back on Trump’s threat to double auto tariffs on Canada from Jan. 1, 2027, arguing the move would hurt American consumers because tariffs function as a tax. The clash has widened beyond trade after Trump signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America.”
