Oleshky ceasefire starts Oct. 29 to open aid routes, evacuations

What's new: The truce is limited to the occupied Kherson town and could become a model for similar local ceasefires.

Russia and Ukraine agreed to a temporary localized ceasefire in the occupied town of Oleshky in Ukraine's Kherson region, with the halt in fighting set to begin Oct. 29 to allow humanitarian aid deliveries and civilian evacuations. The White House said first lady Melania Trump and a representative helped work out the terms with Russian and Ukrainian officials. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed residents who want to leave will be allowed out, while Ukrainian lawmaker Davyd Arakhamia said operations to unblock the town and surrounding area would follow. Oleshky, on the east bank of the Dnipro River, had about 24,000 people before the war; only a few thousand remain amid shortages of food, medicine and electricity.
