North Korea-linked hackers tied to record $6.3 billion Binance theft
What's new: Rival exchanges tightened defenses, while Binance said it secured about 80% of the stolen assets after the Oct. 29 breach.
North Korea-linked hackers are the leading suspects in the $6.3 billion theft from Binance, a heist that blockchain analysis firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis called the biggest in crypto history. The firms tied the attack with high confidence to Lazarus Group, also known as TraderTraitor, a state-backed hacking unit long accused of stealing digital assets for Pyongyang. Binance halted withdrawals after the Oct. 29 breach and said company funds would cover losses. Co-CEO Richard Teng said investigators first traced the attack to a compromised engineer's laptop, then found additional breaches. Binance said about 80% of the stolen assets have been secured.
