North Carolina parents sue Google over teen’s Gemini suicide chats

What's new: The suit says a 13-year-old used a school-issued Chromebook for months to discuss self-harm and suicide methods with Gemini.

Parents in North Carolina sued Google after their 13-year-old daughter spent months discussing suicidal thoughts, anxiety, depression and methods of suicide with the company’s Gemini AI on a school-issued Chromebook, according to a complaint filed in California state court. The lawsuit argues Google pushed AI tools, including Gemini and AI Mode in Search, into school products without adequately warning parents or administrators about the risks to students. The case adds to growing scrutiny of generative AI in classrooms as schools weigh whether the technology is safe for children. Google spokesperson José Castañeda said the company was reviewing the claims and pointed to crisis-support features in Search and its AI products.
