Nikkei wavers as AI shares slide before Nvidia earnings

Why it matters: rising Japanese bond yields and Middle East inflation fears added pressure even as oil pulled back.

Japan's Nikkei swung between gains and losses in Monday trading as AI-linked shares fell ahead of Nvidia results later this week, while investors also weighed inflation risks tied to Middle East tensions. The index was up 0.2% at 65,900.95 after earlier moving between a 0.4% gain and a 0.5% drop. Fujikura fell 3.5% and SoftBank Group lost 3.3%, while Tokyo Electron rose 2.1% and the broader Topix edged up 0.1%. Japanese government bond yields moved higher as traders increasingly expected the Bank of Japan to raise interest rates in September. Nvidia is due to report on Wednesday after Bloomberg said some large customers were told AI server prices would rise by more than 15% because of higher memory costs.
