New York halts new 50-megawatt data centers for 1 year

Why it matters: The state became the first in the US to freeze large data center projects as AI power and water demands draw scrutiny.

New York on July 14 imposed a one-year moratorium on construction of new large data centers, becoming the first US state to take that step as the AI boom drives up concerns over electricity use, water demand and local impacts. The freeze applies to facilities that would use 50 megawatts or more of power. During the moratorium, the Department of Environmental Conservation will stop issuing discretionary permits that are not already complete. Gov. Kathy Hochul also directed state officials to prepare a generic environmental impact statement and set statewide standards for future projects. Her office said the pause will end once those standards are finalized.
