Nearly 1,000 arrested as French protest clashes hit Paris, Marseille

What's new: Authorities deployed 70,000 officers nationwide after last week's looting, while turnout estimates ranged from 400,000 to 820,000.

Mass protests over living costs and inequality drew hundreds of thousands across France on Oct. 24 before violence broke out in Paris, Marseille and several other cities after nightfall. The Interior Ministry put nationwide turnout at about 400,000 to 410,000, while unions said the figure was roughly double that. In Paris, riot police used tear gas and water cannon after a group of hooded youths threw stones and fireworks. Nearly 1,000 people were arrested, the BBC reported. Authorities had deployed 70,000 police and gendarmes, 10,000 more than the previous weekend, as boarded-up shops, closed museums and shuttered Metro stations underscored fears of another wave of unrest.
