Moonshot opens Kimi K3, putting China’s AI model up for download

Why it matters: The release could widen use of Chinese open AI as US officials step up scrutiny over chips and model training.

Beijing startup Moonshot AI is releasing the weights for its Kimi K3 model on Monday, letting developers download, modify and host the system themselves. The move expands Moonshot’s reach in the open-source AI market after K3’s earlier debut rattled AI-related stocks and highlighted how quickly Chinese models are advancing against US rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic. Moonshot says K3 has 2.8 trillion parameters and a one-million-token context window. The company is also seeking a new funding round at a $50 billion valuation ahead of a possible Hong Kong IPO this year, even as a White House official accused it last week of using banned Nvidia chips and distilling output from competing models.
