Monsoon flash floods, landslides in India kill 19

The shutdown affects Hindu pilgrimages to Amarnath and Vaishno Devi, with very heavy rain forecast to continue for two days.

Flash floods and landslides caused by monsoon rains killed at least 19 people in India on Sunday, with rescue operations still under way in the affected areas. Eight deaths were recorded in Nagaland, near the Myanmar border, and 11 others in Jammu and Kashmir, including Rajouri district in Jammu. Local authorities also reported at least 15 people injured and several others missing. Army personnel and emergency response teams rescued 11 people in Rajouri, including five children. The India Meteorological Department warned of the potential for very heavy rain in Jammu and Kashmir over the next two days. For safety reasons, local authorities temporarily suspended Hindu pilgrimages to Amarnath and Vaishno Devi.
