Mitch McConnell, 84, hospitalized as final Senate term nears end

What's new: The former Republican leader's office gave no reason for the hospitalization, and his condition was not disclosed.

Sen. Mitch McConnell was admitted to a hospital Sunday, his office said, without giving a reason or describing his condition. The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican has faced a series of health problems in recent years as his Senate career enters its final months. McConnell has recently used a wheelchair around the Capitol, often with staff assistance. In 2023, he froze twice in public and briefly could not speak during a weekly news conference. He also suffered falls, including one that caused a concussion and kept him away from the Senate for nearly six weeks. McConnell stepped down from Republican leadership in 2024 and said in 2025 that he would not seek another term, ending a Senate tenure of more than four decades after this year.
