Michigan points to lettuce in Cyclospora outbreak topping 2,640 cases

What's new: The state reported 44 hospitalizations and urged people to avoid bagged salads as cases surged 69% since July 10.

Michigan health officials said early findings point to lettuce or salad greens as a possible source of a Cyclospora outbreak that has grown to 2,640 cases and 44 hospitalizations in the state. Officials cautioned the source is not yet definitive and said other foods have not been ruled out. Michigan, which usually records 40 to 50 cases a year, has reported the highest single-year total in its history. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has counted at least 843 confirmed illnesses and 86 hospitalizations across 31 states, though experts say the national tally likely lags state reports. Michigan advised consumers to skip bagged or premixed salad kits and instead use whole heads of lettuce, discarding the outer leaves and washing the rest.
