Michigan logs 2 deaths as Cyclospora outbreak tops 11,200 cases

What's new: The deaths are the first tied to the US outbreak, which has also led to 193 hospitalizations in Michigan.

Michigan reported two deaths linked to the ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreak, the first fatalities since the US surge began in May. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said both people had significant underlying health conditions that may have been worsened by the intestinal illness and dehydration. The state has now recorded 11,234 outbreak-linked cases and 193 hospitalizations. Federal investigators have tied part of the outbreak in nine states to recalled iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms operations in central Mexico, including products sold at Taco Bell, while the Food and Drug Administration continues to investigate other possible sources. Nationally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has logged more than 6,700 lab-confirmed cases, with additional suspected infections still under review.
