Michigan Democrats make final push in high-stakes Senate primary

Why it matters: The winner faces Republican Mike Rogers in a race Democrats see as crucial to holding a seat needed for a Senate majority.

Abdul El-Sayed and Rep. Haley Stevens spent the final weekend of Michigan's Democratic Senate primary courting key blocs in the Detroit area, including Black churchgoers and union members, ahead of Tuesday's vote. The race has drawn national attention as a test of whether Democratic voters in a battleground state want a more progressive path or a more establishment-backed candidate. El-Sayed, backed by Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, has pressed criticism of U.S. aid to Israel. Stevens, endorsed by Chuck Schumer, Gary Peters and Gretchen Whitmer, has argued experience and electability. More than 1 million voters cast ballots before the Aug. 4 primary, mostly by mail.
