Metro to close Singapore’s last 2 department stores as leases end
What’s next: The retailer is weighing smaller multi-concept stores, and Paragon may keep Metro in a new format.
Metro Holdings will stop operating its department stores at Paragon and Causeway Point when their current leases expire, ending the chain’s last large-format department stores in Singapore. The company said the move is part of a broader retail overhaul after a strategic review of shopping habits, consumer preferences and market trends. Metro plans a phased shift toward smaller-format stores, multi-specialty outlets, curated shopping experiences and pop-ups. It is also in talks with current and prospective landlords on new multi-concept stores. CapitaLand Integrated Commercial Trust, which owns Paragon, said Metro has shown interest in staying at the Orchard Road mall under a different retail concept while feasibility studies continue.
