Meta halts employee tracking tool after internal data exposure

What's new: Internal records showed prompts, private chats, and some tax and medical data were visible across the company.

Meta is pausing an internal program that logs employee mouse movements, clicks and keystrokes after documents reviewed by Reuters showed sensitive worker data was accessible across the company. The tool, called the Model Capability Initiative, was introduced in April on computers used by U.S.-based employees to help train Meta’s AI models. The halt followed a high-priority security incident report filed by an employee over the data exposure. Internal materials said the exposed information included prompts, transcriptions, private conversations and performance data. Reuters had reported in May that the program was collecting more data than first described and storing it without encryption.
