Megawati recalls 30 years of Kudatuli, highlights police assault
At the TIM exhibit, she told young people that citizens should be equal before the law and wrote a message on conviction and courage.
Megawati Soekarnoputri recalled the July 27, 1996 riot, or Kudatuli, while attending a 30-year exhibit on the incident at Taman Ismail Marzuki, Cikini, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday. The PDIP chair questioned the attack on the PDI office on Jalan Diponegoro 58, Menteng, which she said was the party’s legitimate office granted by the state. She also highlighted the involvement of security personnel in the assault and called Kudatuli a symbol of injustice. At the event, Megawati wrote a message for the younger generation to hold to conviction, determination, courage and patience, and stressed that citizens have equal rights under the law. Based on Komnas HAM findings, the riot killed five people, injured 149, left 23 missing and led to 136 arrests.
