Qatar mediator returns to Tehran to press US-Iran deal
New: Iran earlier rejected Qatar's peace draft and has insisted from the start that the nuclear issue is not negotiable.
Qatar's mediator returned to Tehran on Friday to press for a deal that could end the United States-Iran conflict, in a diplomatic initiative coordinated with Washington. The move followed reports that U.S. Vice President JD Vance sent a message to Iranian security official Mohsen Rezaei to revive talks that had stalled. According to sources familiar with the discussions, Qatar delivered a peace plan draft on Sunday, but a senior Iranian official rejected it as unacceptable. Tehran also reiterated that it would not soften its stance on the nuclear issue. The earlier deadlock was driven by disagreements over freedom and security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global energy supplies.
