Massachusetts GOP lieutenant governor nominee halts bid after DUI crash
What's new: Shawn Oliver was charged after police said his vehicle rolled over and hit five parked cars in New Bedford.
Massachusetts Republican lieutenant governor nominee Shawn Oliver suspended his campaign after his arrest in a late-night rollover crash in New Bedford, just weeks before voters head to the polls. New Bedford police said officers responded about 11:40 p.m. Saturday to Dartmouth Street, where a vehicle had overturned after striking five parked cars. Two of the parked vehicles suffered extensive damage. Oliver, 42, a New Bedford city councilor, was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital for treatment. Police later charged him with operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, a marked lanes violation and speeding. Republican gubernatorial nominee Mike Minogue urged Oliver to step aside, saying no one else was hurt.
