Maine's Jackson stands by 'shut up' jab at Collins after debate protest

What's new: The protester and Sunrise Movement said the interruption was not coordinated with Troy Jackson's campaign.

Maine Democratic Senate candidate Troy Jackson defended telling Sen. Susan Collins to "shut up" during their final debate after Collins linked a protester to his campaign. The exchange came Thursday when a demonstrator opposing data centers interrupted Collins, and she called the person "obviously one of Troy's supporters." Jackson, speaking Sunday on CNN, said he did not know the protester and would not apologize. The Sunrise Movement later identified the interrupter as one of its volunteers, and Bowdoin College student Henry Elgie told The New York Times there was "zero coordination" with Jackson's campaign. The flare-up adds fresh tension to a closely contested race ahead of the Nov. 3 election.
