M6.4 inland quake shakes Simalungun, felt in Aceh, Padang

BMKG said the 163-km-deep quake posed no tsunami risk, with the strongest shaking reaching V MMI.

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake shook Simalungun Regency, North Sumatra, on Saturday (15/8) at around 17.54 WIB. BMKG said the epicenter was 10 kilometers southeast of Simalungun at coordinates 2.97 LU and 98.95 BT, with a depth of 163 kilometers. The tremor was felt in Medan, Tebingtinggi, Kabanjahe, Limapuluh, Pematangsiantar, Banda Aceh, and Padang. BBMKG Wilayah I Medan head Hendro Nugroho said the quake posed no tsunami risk. BMKG also recorded the strongest intensity at V MMI in Tebingtinggi, Kabanjahe, and Limapuluh, while several other areas in North Sumatra, Aceh, and Kepulauan Nias felt shaking of II to IV MMI. BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Director Wijayanto said the quake was triggered by subduction zone activity with a down-throw strike-slip mechanism.
