Luigi Mangione pursues psychiatric defense in CEO killing case

What’s next: Prosecutors will get Mangione’s psychiatric records before his Sept. 8 state murder trial in Manhattan.

Luigi Mangione plans to argue that he was in a state of extreme emotional disturbance when prosecutors say he fatally shot UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan in December 2024. At a June 17 hearing, Judge Gregory Carro said Mangione’s lawyers would present the psychiatric defense and ordered them to immediately turn over his psychiatric records to prosecutors. Carro also dismissed a charge tied to possession of a large-capacity ammunition magazine after prosecutors agreed they could not use it at trial because of an improper search during Mangione’s arrest in Pennsylvania. Mangione has pleaded not guilty. His state trial is set to begin Sept. 8, with another hearing scheduled for Aug. 11.
