Landslide buries homes in Chongqing, over 60 evacuated
Nine people have been pulled from the debris without life-threatening injuries, while the number still buried is being verified.
A landslide struck Pengshui Miao and Tujia Autonomous County in Chongqing, southwest China, on Friday morning and buried several residential buildings along the banks of the Wujiang River. CCTV reported that a community worker saw rocks falling around 08.00 local time and triggered an emergency warning. Authorities ordered the evacuation of more than 60 residents, but the slope collapsed at 09.08 while the operation was still under way, leaving some people buried. Xinhua reported that 9 people had been rescued from the debris and none were in life-threatening condition. China’s Ministry of Emergency Management activated a level two emergency response and sent a 100-member rescue team. In addition, 206 personnel and 49 fire and rescue vehicles were deployed to the site.
