More than 60 worshippers abducted from mosque in Niger, Nigeria

Police said no one was killed, while a joint security force has been deployed to search for and rescue the victims.

Armed groups abducted more than 60 worshippers from a mosque in Niger State, Nigeria, during Friday prayers on Aug. 22. Police said the attackers stormed Kpenya Mosque in Dekara district, Borgu local government area, at about 2 p.m. local time after first striking the villages of Gidan-Zana and Kpenya. Police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun said preliminary reports showed no fatalities. A joint security team has been deployed to the scene for situation assessment and a rescue operation. A resident said the attack appeared coordinated and also hit several other communities in Borgu while people were at worship.
