Lebanon's Aoun heads to White House to press Israel pullback

What's next: Aoun plans to present a written proposal on disarming Hezbollah as he seeks a phased Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun is set to meet President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday, aiming to shore up a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah and push for Israeli troops to leave southern Lebanon. Aoun arrived in Washington over the weekend and met Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday. Lebanese officials say he will present Trump with a written plan to decommission Hezbollah's weapons while asking Washington to pressure Israel to begin a phased pullback under a June 26 U.S.-brokered framework. Recent U.S.-mediated talks in Rome also produced follow-up steps for pilot zones in southern Lebanon, where Lebanese armed forces would take over security as Israeli forces withdraw.
