KRI Gajah Mada to be handed over in Jakarta after Italy arrival
The former ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi will then sail to Lampung, where the carrier base is targeted to be fully operational by late September 2026.
The Defense Ministry has confirmed that the former ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi aircraft carrier will undergo the grant handover from Italy to Indonesia while docked in Jakarta. After the documents are signed, the ship, which will be renamed KRI Gajah Mada, will proceed to the carrier base in Lampung. Navy Chief of Staff Muhammad Ali had previously scheduled the ship to arrive in mid-September 2026, with an estimate of 15-20 September, after a voyage of more than 20 days from Italy. The route will pass through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea under the escort of an Italian frigate. The Indonesian Navy also said infrastructure at the Lampung base is still in the finishing stage and is targeted to be fully operational by the end of September 2026.
