Kremlin: Nuclear arms are the only barrier to world war

New: the New START treaty expired in February, ending U.S.-Russia limits on warheads.

On June 24, the Kremlin said nuclear arms are now the only deterrent keeping the world from sliding into global war, amid concerns over a new multinational arms race. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, speaking at a foreign policy forum in Moscow, said the global security system is being eroded and there is no replacement for the last arms control agreement between Russia and the United States. The New START treaty expired in February, ending limits on the world's two largest nuclear powers. Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly used nuclear rhetoric during the offensive in Ukraine. U.S. President Donald Trump has pushed for a new deal that would also include China, but Beijing has refused. Moscow also wants Britain and France included if China is brought in.
