Authorities were still accounting for passengers and victims Sunday night as search operations continued by sea and air.
KMP Mutiara Sentosa 2 caught fire in waters off Sumenep, East Java, on Sunday (2/8/2026) while sailing from Surabaya to Makassar. The passenger motor vessel was carrying about 250 people when the blaze broke out in waters north of Madura. By Sunday night, the number of victims could not yet be confirmed because a joint team was still compiling passenger and casualty data while continuing evacuation efforts. Search operations were deployed by sea and air to speed up rescue efforts and ensure all passengers were found. Basarnas also opened an information post at the Gapura Surya Nusantara Passenger Terminal, Tanjung Perak Port, Surabaya, to assist families seeking news of their relatives.
