Kenya protests flare over US Ebola quarantine site in Nanyuki

Why it matters: Police used tear gas after earlier protests left two people dead, highlighting rising backlash to a US-backed facility.

Residents in Nanyuki, Kenya, protested again over a U.S.-backed quarantine center meant for American citizens with high-risk Ebola exposure in the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan or Uganda. Police fired tear gas at demonstrators, and NPR reported that two protesters were fatally shot during protests last week. The facility is being prepared at an air base about 120 miles from Nairobi despite public anger and a court ruling against it. The Kenyan government approved the plan, with President William Ruto describing it as part of a partnership with Washington. The State Department said Kenya was chosen because of its proximity and limited airport capacity elsewhere in the region. Critics, including the Katiba Institute and some Ebola specialists, say the site could pose public health and legal risks.
