Kemenko PM and UI launch mangrove economic value program
The government is preparing a pilot project and incentive tools for regions that protect mangroves, with supporting policy targeted.
The Ministry of Coordinating for Community Empowerment and Universitas Indonesia launched a program to mobilize the economic value of mangroves in Depok, West Java, on Monday. The program is aimed at community empowerment while linking mangrove protection to carbon market schemes. Kemenko PM Deputy Abdul Haris said Indonesia has nearly 3.4 million hectares of mangroves, about 20 percent of the world’s mangrove area. The government views these areas as important because they can absorb carbon, while industrial zones along Java are a source of emissions. Kemenko PM is preparing cooperation with the Ministry of Forestry, the Ministry of Environment, UI, and local governments to develop instruments, including the possible adoption of local regulations and the designation of pilot areas. Haris said the North Coast of Java from Cirebon to Probolinggo is among the areas seen as promising.
