Kemenag drafts KOSMIN, a sign-language standard for fiqh terms

The program seeks to unify signs for terms such as paradise, hell, menstruation, postpartum bleeding and wet dreams.

The Ministry of Religious Affairs has begun drafting a standardized religious sign vocabulary for people with hearing and speech disabilities in Indonesia through the Kosa Isyarat Keislaman Indonesia, or KOSMIN, program. The program kick-off was held to mark 1 Muharam 1448 Hijriah at Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta. Director General of Islamic Community Guidance Abu Rokhmad said many theology and worship-fiqh terms still do not have standard signs, making it difficult for the Deaf community to understand or explain Islamic teachings. He cited the lack of agreement on terms such as paradise, hell, menstruation, postpartum bleeding, istihadhah, and wet dreams. Kemenag said the standardization of the Islamic sign vocabulary is targeted for completion this year, after previously finishing the Master Al-Qur'an Sign and its tafsir components.
