Keiko Fujimori opens unbeatable 43,386-vote lead in Peru runoff

What's next: Peru's election authority plans to declare the official winner in mid-July after reviewing the last overseas ballots.

Keiko Fujimori built an insurmountable lead in Peru's presidential runoff late Tuesday, putting her on course to take office after one of the country's closest elections. Peru's ONPE election authority said Fujimori had 50.11% of the vote, leading leftist rival Roberto Sanchez by 43,386 votes, with only 40,213 potential votes left to count. Peru's national electoral jury also rejected Sanchez's request to annul thousands of overseas votes that largely favored Fujimori. Sanchez alleged fraud without offering evidence and said he would not recognize the result, raising the risk of a broader political crisis in a country that has cycled through eight presidents in eight years.
