Karl Bushby ends 28-year, 31,000-mile walk around the world

What's new: The former paratrooper returned to Hull at 57 after crossing 4 continents and 30 countries without using transport to move forward.

British adventurer Karl Bushby returned to his home in Hull, England, on Monday, finishing a 28-year journey to walk around the world. Bushby, 57, set out from Punta Arenas, Chile, on Nov. 1, 1998, and covered 31,000 miles, or 50,000 kilometers, across four continents and 30 countries before reuniting with his mother, Angela. He kept two rules throughout the trip: he would not use boats, planes or other transport to advance, and he would not come home until he finished. Along the way, he crossed the Bering Strait over shifting ice and swam the Caspian Sea and the English Channel. The trek was delayed by visa problems, the 2008 financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic.
