Judge sets June 2028 trial for 9/11 defendant Khalid Sheikh Mohammed

What's next: The case heads to trial after a plea deal that would have spared him the death penalty was thrown out.

A military judge set June 5, 2028, as the start of the long-delayed trial for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the accused architect of the Sept. 11 attacks, and three co-defendants at Guantanamo Bay. Lt. Col. Michael A. Schrama rejected prosecutors' push for a 2027 start, writing that more time is needed to resolve pretrial issues, including disputes over what evidence can be used. Mohammed, Walid bin Attash, Ali Abdul Aziz Ali and Mustafa al-Hawsawi face charges tied to the 2001 attacks that killed about 3,000 people. The case has been slowed for years by legal fights over evidence obtained through CIA black-site interrogations. A plea agreement reached in 2024 was later revoked and then blocked by a federal appeals court.
