Judge halts FBI headquarters move to Reagan Building in DC

Why it matters: The ruling blocks use of funds for a Washington relocation and revives the approved Greenbelt, Maryland plan.

A federal judge blocked the Trump administration from shifting FBI headquarters to the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, ruling the reversal of an earlier Maryland site selection violated the law. U.S. District Judge Theodore D. Chuang barred the administration from moving the bureau to the downtown office complex, renovating it for FBI use or redirecting money for the project. The dispute centers on a yearslong search to replace the aging J. Edgar Hoover Building on Pennsylvania Avenue. During Joe Biden’s term, officials chose Greenbelt, Maryland, over Virginia for a new campus. Maryland and Prince George’s County sued after Trump appointees tried to scrap that plan in favor of the Reagan Building.
