Judge clears end of TPS for 5,000 Ethiopians in the US

What's next: the ruling removes the last court block, though claims alleging discriminatory motives will continue in Boston.

A federal judge in Boston cleared the Trump administration to end Temporary Protected Status for more than 5,000 Ethiopians, removing the last court-ordered barrier to the policy. U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy lifted a stay that had let Ethiopian TPS holders keep living and working in the United States while the case proceeded. The decision follows a June Supreme Court ruling that allowed the administration to end similar protections for people from Haiti and Syria. Murphy rejected arguments that the Department of Homeland Security lacked authority to terminate the designation, but he allowed plaintiffs to keep pursuing claims that the move was driven by racial or national-origin discrimination. Ethiopia received TPS in 2022 because of armed conflict and humanitarian conditions.
