Spanish F-18 jets shoot down drone in Romanian airspace
It is the fourth drone destroyed in Romania since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Spanish F-18 fighter jets assigned to NATO shot down a drone that entered Romanian airspace in the early hours of Aug. 16. Romania’s Defense Ministry said the drone came in from Moldova and was hit at about 05:01 local time. Debris fell in an uninhabited area in Galati, near the border with Ukraine. NATO Air Command said the operation involved two F-18s from the Spanish contingent, which has about 200 personnel and 11 aircraft in Romania. NATO said details of the incident are still under investigation, but the drone was believed to have come from Russia. In a separate incident the same day, drone debris was also found in the Black Sea off the coast of Constanta.
