Japan quake of 5.7 injures more than 20, disrupts trains

What's new: No tsunami warning was issued, and operator Chubu Electric found no problems at the Hamaoka nuclear plant.

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck central Japan early Sunday, injuring more than 20 people in Aichi and Shizuoka prefectures and disrupting rail service. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake hit at 1:04 a.m. with its epicenter in western Shizuoka at a depth of about 40 kilometers. Shaking reached upper 5 on Japan's seismic intensity scale in Chita, Aichi, and lower 5 in parts of Aichi, Nagano and Gifu. Local train lines were temporarily halted, while Tokaido Shinkansen service between Shizuoka and Gifu-Hashima was delayed for safety checks. The agency issued no tsunami warning and said any link to a possible Nankai Trough megaquake was considered low.
