Janeese Lewis George moves toward DC mayor's office after concession
Why it matters: With Muriel Bowser leaving, the result points to a sharper fight with Trump over home rule and federal policing in Washington.
Janeese Lewis George is set to become Washington's next mayor after former Council member-at-large Kenyan McDuffie conceded the Democratic primary two days after the vote. In the heavily Democratic district, Lewis George is now the clear favorite for November's general election. She would succeed Mayor Muriel Bowser, who did not seek a fourth term. Lewis George, a Ward 4 council member and democratic socialist, has taken a more confrontational line toward President Donald Trump than Bowser did, especially over his National Guard deployment and his threats to curb the district's home rule. Her campaign also opposed using a juvenile curfew while federal forces and ICE agents remain active in the city.
